You are correct on these statements, although having another female along
should be looked into. This thread reminded me this morning of a story told
to me by a close friend of mine. He is a recently retired Army major with
three daughters. Being an Eagle, he has awlays been active with the Scouts
no matter where he has been stationed.
He brought his oldest daughter to a council wide camporee he had helped
organize and was involved in running. Saturday night, after the campfire
and everybody had gone to bed, his daughter wakes him up to inform him that
she is having her first period and needs appropriate supplies.
This was at a time when women were first being accepted into the ranks of
Boy Scout leadership and not many were to be found yet at a camporee.
Furthermore, the chances of one of these few women having the appropriate
supplies was probably slim. Facing the embarassment (for him, at least) of
having to find and question these women in the middle of the night or hiking
out of the campgrounds to his car and driving through the wilderness in hope
of finding an open store at two in the morning, he chose the second course.
Luckily, an idea hit him as he passed the camp ranger's house.
He knocked on the door of the camp ranger's house and after explaining the
situation twice (once to the ranger and again to the ranger's wife), the
ranger's wife had the required supplies. She came out with my friend to his
tent and handled the situation smoothly much to the reief of my poor friend.
So while you are correct, Drew, that a girl can sleep in the same tent as
her parent on a campout and, therefore, can be the only female on the trip,
I would advise against it. Some problems us poor men are not equipped to
handle and are better left to those who are ;)
