Without getting into all the "whereases", and without wishing to defend or
offend anyone ...
* It is rather difficult to "violate" the Federal Flag Code (Title 136,
United States Code, sections 173-178) when the operative qualifier is
"should" (not "shall"). Detailed awareness of the 'code' may be less
important than the intention to use the flag honorably ('awareness' concerns
can be corrected privately after the event).
* The United States Navy and, I expect, the United States Coast Guard, hoist
a church pennant above the national flag while religious services are in
progress aboard ship (noted in 36 USC 175(c))
