To all those that posted to me regarding flag ceremony etiquette I thank
you. The posting contained valued information as well as diversity in
procedure. In addtion to the posting material I have also used "YOUR FLAG"
(BSA Publication) to help put together a procedure. "YOUR FLAG" procedure
follows the situations where the flags are already in place or as part of an
outdoor ceremony. My need is for indoor presentation of the colors. I
need help to clarify the following:
1) It appears that the salute is given during the Pledge and not when
the flags are presented. Is this correct?
2) The conflict I have found with question (1) is that a salute is
required when the flag passes in parade or review. Is the presentation of
the colors into a room considered a review and therefore the salure is
required? The required salute for the flag passing in "review" is further
complicated by the required that the salute is not held until the command of
"two". The salute is given when the approaching flag is about six paces
away and held until the flag is six paces past.
The BSA publication deals with the flag being in place in a room for the
sequence of commands. It is important therefore to know if the colors
coming into a room is considered a "review". On page 47 of my booklet "YOUR
FLAG", "Carrying The Colors Into Buildings" is discussed however no mention
is made of a salute being given on entry.
3) I have received mixed messages as to the posting sequence of the
flags. Is the US Flag posted first or last? In the hosting of the colors
the US Flag goes up first. Since the general rule is that the US Flag
proceeds why would the US Flag be posted last?
4) Does the color guard salute once the flags are posted?
5) The salute is completed at the end of the Pledge. Does the assembly
remain at attention until the color guard returns to the rank?
Thanks for your help.
