On Sharpening Bow Saws (and Axes!)

OK, somehow I made it this far in life never having actually sharpened a
bow saw with a file. The Scout who has volunteered to instruct 2nd Class
requirement 2b is not real clear on it either, and I'd like to show him
how it is done.
The BSA Handbook says "...stroke the file upward, following the shape of
each tooth. Sharpen one side of the saw, then the other."
The illustration does not make things clearer. The teeth face to the
left, but the caption reads, "When sharpening the saw, stroke the file
Bill Hillcourt's edition of the Handbook talks about following the bevel
of the teeth, but I'm not real clear on what a file is supposed to do.

OK, I never sharpened an axe either :)
Can anyone help me on this?
