Our unit is screwed with the NEW requirement. Let us use an
example. We have 125 boys in the unit. The average unit has about 30
scouts. We have a great recruitment drive and recruit 10 boys which
takes our total to 135. Next year we are required to meet the new total
or fail. We have a very strong unit and exceed every requirement, but if
you miss one scout from your total, your out. Any math teacher could
see that someday, if every unit was quality and met its total, each unit
would be a 1000 scouts strong troop. OK, I did go a little far in the
future, but you see what I mean.
They penalize the well established units to the benifit of the new unit. It
would be better for us to drop out of Quality for a year to start out with a
new lower number.
I see fewer and fewer units reaching Quality. I see the local DE taking
the heat from upstairs. Kind of like Congress passing a law to help
people in one state and making all the other states pay for the law.
What makes a unit quality is what you see in a unit. I let my kid join this
unit because of what I perceive to be a quality unit and not because
some Nimrod in Irving said so. I figure it as one less patch to purchase
and change each year.
The rantings of the crazied Scout leader.
