I am proud to announce that Oren Macmillan successfully passed his Eagle
Board of Review on October 30, and the paperwork was turned in to Council
the next day, so Oren is now just waiting for the postcard letting me
know that his medal and other materials are waiting for me to pick up at
the service center.
I know all of you join me in offering Oren our heartiest
I spoke with one of the BOR members afterward, and he told me that, when
asked, "What was the hardest thing about scouting for you to do over the
last six or so years?", Oren said "Getting here. It would have been so
easy to quit." Oren lives in a pretty rough neighborhood by Alexandria
VA standards, comes from a youth culture that doesn't value the Eagle
award very much, and spent the two years before I got to T-113 in a
troo9p that was basically dying (I don't even think they met regularly
the first half of 1995).
So, these facts make Oren's achievement even more remarkable. Oren may
not have been my best camper, or my most skilled scout when it came to
knots and lashings, but I view him as a success story, and he's an Eagle
in every sense of the word, and I'm proud of him.
