I have a slightly different viewpoint on this issue. My oldest son LOVES the
web. It is his research tool and recreation of choice. He also sometimes spends
time at home when we (my wife and I) are not there. I don't remove the doors
from my house or tear the phone off the wall because someone might contact him
during those times. I don't lock up the computers so he can't use them.
Instead, we teach him how to handle himself in situations that might arise. In
that way he is safe (or at least as safe as possible) at home OR ANYWHERE ELSE
when we are with him or not. If we tried to isolate him from those dangers he
would not be prepared to deal with them when something did happen. I speak
frankly (not frighteningly) with my son concerning child abuse and the
different ways abusers might use to contact him. Honest and open communication
are the strongest defense against these people.
We must be careful to avoid the type of thinking that brought the City of
Chicago this close (and my fingers are VERY close together) to removing all the
pay phones from Downtown Chicago because they were being used by drug dealers
for their transactions. Criminals always find new ways to continue their
A primary goal of the scouting program is to teach progressive responsibility
and leadership. This is no different.
Gone are the broken eyes we saw through in dreams.
