As usual, there have already been lots of good suggestions on your
dilemma. I won't repeat what's already been said, but just "ditto"
most of it, and add one thing:
Our district SMF training has, over the years, developed into a very
"open" format. Everyone and anyone is welcome to show up for the
weekend and either help out or just hang out, drink coffee, and eat.
While some just show up for the social aspect; just to visit with
friends, I think it has led to the training having more "depth"; the
staff is made up of Scouters from a lot of different troops and
towns, and therefore, different experiences.
You may be able to "worm your way in" to the training staff by
getting together with other concerned Scouters in your district and,
as a group, just show up at this training course to "help out
wherever you can."
