What you did Henry is probably the right thing, just make sure this policy
is enforced in the coming years. To give you an idea of how devious people
can be, during JOTI in the night from saturday to sunday (in north american
time) it was afternoon in Australia at that time, with lots of cubs and
brownies on, somebody from Montreal, Canada, got in the #scouting channel on
DAL Net and started to figure out which participants where girls to cruise
them. When reminded he was not in a cruising bar and that the channel was
for scouts, he got more and more annoying, offering beer to everybody and
other language I prefer not to quote. When that incident occured, there was
no operator on the #scouting channel. So no body could kick that guy out...
Besides that incident, the Kamsoks of l'Islet (girls and boys age 14-16)
enjoyed their participation in JOTI, they were online from 17:00 Saturday
night to 6:00 AM Sunday (Eastern Daylight Time), they made contact with
scouts and scouters from more than 20 countries and found out how different
countries have different ways of doing things and different languages, but
besides these differences all scouts are "Always Ready".
We were online on both irc.dal.net and basel.ch.irc.scout.net we found lots
of scouts on both networks on channels #JOTI and #scouting.
basel.ch.irc.scout.net is relatively new, it is operated by Global Scout Net
and is monitored around the clock by human operators with which you can chat
online. That server is not linked to other networks and was set up with the
sole purpose of providing youths from around the world with access to safe
IRC. You can visit the Global Scout Net IRC server home page at
I invite everybody of this list to make basel.ch.irc.scout.net known in the
scout community and to use it instead of the other IRC networks. Let's make
it the meeting place of scouts and scouters.
