How can a Pack limit the number of awards that a boy earns? That
seems very counterproductive ... yet I've heard of other Packs that
say "only 3 belt loops."
That's wrong. Boys are invited to achieve as much as they can. It's
wrong to say they can only do so much; it's wrong to say they can't
receive the awards for 6 months after they earn it.
My Pack charges $80 per year for all members. All awards, patches,
book, hat, neckerchief & such included. Boys often receive 20+
awards every year. Webelos may receive 30+ awards if they are very
Yes, our budget is stretched. Yes, money is a struggle. However,
please remember to make all decisions with one thought in mind:
"What's best for the boys?"
If you answer that question every time you have a policy issue,
you'll make the right decision ... such as when Webelos should cross
over. Many Packs "hold" the 5th grade Webelos until May/June.
That's not the recommendation of the national program, and it's not
best for the boy. Webelos should cross over in February/March ...
well in time to attend summer camp as a Boy Scout.
