As a Trainer for my Distict the Webelos Program is an 18 month program that can
take as long as 21/2 years to complete. Every boy matures at a
different rate and speed. While there are advantages to the receiving
troop to get the boys early most Webelos boys are not yet mature enough
to co-exist in a Troop with a lot of older boys. The decision to send a
5th grader up should depend largely on how mature the boy is, what is the
age ratio of the receiving Troop, how many of the boys friends from the
Pack will be going with him into the same troop. These matters should
be discussed in depth between the boys Parents and the Webelos leader at
the end of the fourth grade. This will allow the leader to adjust the den progr
am to speed up, or slow down the activiites for the individual
boys, so that no one gets bored.
Failure to do so, usually ends up with a Scout that enters a Troop only to be ov
erwhelmed after the first couple of outings.
