My PLC proposed a Scout Spirit bead system where the SM and SPL
would determine at the end of each meeting or outing which individuals
earned a Scout Spirit bead. If they did not attend, were not in uniform,
or were disruptive and uncooperative then they wouldn't earn one.
The PLC wants to set a minimum number of beads for each rank to
quantify "show Scout Spirit". We have NOT implemented this system
as I'm still thinking on it.
After reading Michael Bowman's comments I think we will never get
around to using the system. It would be much easier for me to deny
signing off on Scout spirit or on being active if I had some formula
like the Scout Spirit beads. I could then blame the formula or the
PLC that thought it up. Parents and Scouts couldn't question my
judgment or fairness. It's much harder to look someone in the eye
and say ** I ** do not find your behavior acceptable or ** I ** do
not feel you have shown proper Scout spirit and this is why ** I **
feel that way.
But maybe the courage needed to make this kind of judgment
and then to take ownership of the decision is the kind of example
we Scoutmasters are expected to set for our boys. Thanks Mike,
for helping me find some backbone on this issue.
