Frank Porter asked for advice on small propane tanks, and Ron Goble noted
that they are not refillable.
I believe Frank was discussing the new 5-lb propane tanks, which ARE
refillable. They are a handy size, just light enough to consider hauling
a short distance. They sit atop a picnic table nicely, and form a stable
base for a propane lantern, which will last all week at summer camp. Or
they provide enough for lamp and stove for a weekend when used with a
The drawback is that they cost as much as the 20-lb tanks [about $20 in
these parts]. You can weigh them, use those LCD temperature strips, or
just shake them and listen to determine how full they are. But they are
ultimately much more convenient and cheaper than the 1-lb disposables.
If you want economy, you've got to pay for it.
