The way I understand it, the Troop itself is NOT a legal entity at all and
therefore can't be considered non-profit nor for-profit. The Troop is
classified based on its sponsoring organization! So, if you are sponsored
by a non-profit organization, like a church, as my Troop is, then you are
also non-profit and you use your sponsor's tax-exempt number whenever it is
called for. If you are sponsored by a for-profit business or group, then you
may indeed have some tax problems to deal with...
I agree with Warren, "the folks at the council office should be familiar with
the requirements in your state." Check with them for a more definitive
answer to your query.
