four parts!) I tried sending it in one, then two parts, but I messed up.
I was recently named Vice Chair for Program for Breukelen=20
District, Brooklyn, NY which covers more than
half of the Borough of Brooklyn. What follows are some ideas and=20
thoughts I have regarding the program in the
District. I have been distributing this memorandum to my fellow Scouters=
in Brooklyn for their comments. I
would appreciate YOUR thoughts, comments and ideas.
Publicize/promote camping at TMR.
Survey reasons units do not go to TMR or to Summer Camp. Report=20
let=92s see if we can get problems corrected.
Camping Summit: meeting at Alpine or TMR of as many leaders as=20
convince to show up. We can get GNYC to this summit. No Bull!!
If we cannot get TMR problems =93fixed=94 to our standards, we should=20
be ready to
recommend alternatives to District Units. Bear in mind that Camperships=20
only for Scouts attending TMR or Cub Camp at Alpine.
Coordinate units camping together if they are short on adult=20
Non-traditional units need their own program. They do not belong=20
in camps with
traditional units. Traditional units are those units which use the Scout=
described in the Boy Scout Handbook and other material. Their time at=20
TMR is their
summer encampment of a year-round program.
Select the week for Breukelen Provisional. One week early in the=20
season or at the
end of the season (allows boys to attend other camps).
Need three or four top leaders for proper coverage. We should=20
also recruit boy
leaders (who would not pay) to be SPL, ASPLs.
Publicize Provo unit and recruit campers
Scouts going District Provisional should have one weekend=20
before summer camp.
This needs to be a high quality program for the summer. It=20
requires mature, skilled
leaders as there are bound to be conflicts between boys who are strangers=
to each other
SHORT TERM - UNIT CAMPING:
Promote use of Alpine and Pouch.
Determine other sites which meet to-be-set criteria of safety,=20
proximity to the city
and cost. Other Scout camps? (Tour permits?)
Link up units for Short Term Camping where possible
Determine reasons units are not doing Short Term camping=20
Units should be camping at least 3 -4 times a year minimum
Survey units camping plans - Can camping at GNYC get us info on=20
Set up mentoring units for new units.
SHORT TERM - PROVISIONAL:
Some units just cannot get it together and go camping. I propose=20
that we help get
boys OUT to camp.
To enable Scouts/units to attend Short Term camp.
Start with 2 times a year - shoot for 3time a year.
One short term provisional encampment should be tied into First=20
with program provided by district.
Other encampments: have Scoutmasters and Senior Patrol Leaders=20
programs for their own units or in cooperation with other units -=20
Can have units provide own food or can run the encampment=20
Jamboree style with
May need to provide =93dining hall=94 style for one of the short term=20
part of an encampment.
Can district provide cooking gear or should we consider tin can=20
