non camper: an update

You guys are good. I printed off your comments and showed them to the PLC
and after reading things they hadn't considered, they decided they were
wrong and would work more towards encouring the reluctant one to come with
us, particularly on some of the one-day, no overnight stuff.
And on the personal front, my wife spoke in confidence with some mutual
acquaintenances and now theorizes that his not wanting to camp could very
well come from fear, conscious or not, of leaving/losing his mother. It
seems that she has had some very serious problems in the last 2 years --
drug (crack cocaine) abuse, some abusive relationships, loss of her job due
to absenteeism, danger of losing her home, etc. In fact, the grandmother is
trying to get custody of her son to protect him. None of this was shared
with the PLC, but we did explain that there are serious family problems and
support is needed. Kids aren't dumb -- they probably guessed enough and are
willing to try to help by at least not giving him anything else to worry about.
