Maybe an intermediate approach would be to pick a nearby
campout, and have this boy attend it as a day outing. He
can participate in the program, help with the meals and
cleanup, stay for the campfire, and go home at taps.
Certainly arrangements could be made either for the
mom to be there at the campout, or for a relative or
leaders (2 of course) to take the boy home at the end
of the day. We have had a number of Scouts cut a
campout short because of other obligations - no reason
would need to be given as to why the boy was leaving
early. (or just say "Tommy needs to go home now -
he has other plans for tonight")
Another option would be to see if he would attend an
event that is specifically a day event - a hike, or a
bicycle outing, or a museum trip or something on that
Maybe once he got started, he would surprise himself!!
Just my 2 cents worth!
