I understand your request for ideas with regards to the Scoutmasters
Fundamentals Course (SMF). However I question your "putting together the
I am currently the coordinator and SM for our districts fall offering of
SMF and am utilizing the syllabus developed by BSA. I find it to be
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! I provided a full copy of it to all course presentors.
It spells out objectives, gives outlines, times and references. It gives
great examples of information covered. It lists ALL equipment, handouts,
videos, display materials, etc. needed by course presentors,
participants,, corrdinators, et. al.
It's appendix is a terrific source of handouts.
I also BELIEVE that although we can add more to it, it provides the
minimum level of information we want to ensure gets to all the
participants. It gives us a STANDARD of training to ensure that the
participant in New Hampshire, gets the same basics as those in Texas,
California, or elsewhere in the country.
If you do not have a copy of this valuable document, I urge you to attack
your district exec. or council till you do.
My predecessor to this project (who now has relocated to Arizonia (lucky
Arizonia)) Put together rubbermaid type containers that hold copies of
all the handouts, videos, audio casettes, pamphlets, posters, books,
etc. that are listed in the syllabus lists of materials. It is a
wonderful package and has made my job as coordinator immensely easier.
If you have any further questions, please write.
