news from MacScouter's "other half"

Well, as Gary announced, we survived ... er... ah ... just got back from
... our first Wood Badge weekend ... and I am soooooo tired!! How do folks
survive the week-long courses?? (Of course, a very large part of me would
MUCH rather be back in camp right now ... how is THAT for illogical??)
Our "hill" is Boulder Creek Scout Reservation, which is a beautiful camp on
Bear Creek Road in Boulder Creek, CA (near Santa Cruz) ... the camp is
fairly centrally located for the cluster and has enough space to easily
accomodate the 67(?) participants ... actually, I don't know the number ...
but we have Beavers, Bobwhites, Eagles, Foxes, Owls, Bears, Buffalos,
Antelopes, and CROWS!! That's right, NINE Patrols ... ranging from 6 to 8
members each. The only drawback that I noticed about the camp is that it
IS right on Bear Creek Road ... which means I had to get back to the
suburbs (home) to NOT hear traffic noises at night.
There are several folks from the Mount Hamilton District on this course in
addition to Gary and I ... Dave Stone, our District Commissioner, Charley
Wilson, our District Scout RoundTable Commissioner and Bill Dale, a
Committee Member from "our" Troop (Troop 92) are participants, and Patrick
Wilson ("used to be a Beaver"), our Troop Committee Chair and Bill Cline
("used to be an Owl"), our District Finance Chair are on Staff. Great
pains have been taken to separate all of us.
Our Patrol (what did we "used to be"??? hmmmm ... _I_ had to wait to see
... so do you!) is one of the smaller patrols -- we number "only" 6 ...
Our current Patrol Leader is Tim Blum. Tim lives in Redwood City, CA. Tim
says he is "40+" ... he has 3 children, 14, 18, and 20. He has 22 years of
experience as a Scouter ... he has lead Scouts, Explorers, and Sea Scouts.
He is a recepient of the Silver Beaver Award and has been a deputy Sheriff
for the past 28 years... he plans to retire from that job next year and
begin a new career at the Monterey Bay Aquarium using his PhD in Marine
Our Assistant Patrol Leader is Dave Binder. Dave is married and has two
sons. He is an engineer and has been involved in Scouting for 8 years. He
also collects BSA handbooks and has (what was that number, Dave?? over
1000???) ... "lots", anyway. He collects different printings within the
different copyright dates and DOES have duplicates. I suspect he needs a
new room on his house to store them!!
The other members of "our patrol":
Yen Nguyen - Yen is a student at San Jose State and hopes to "get a seat"
at a good Medical School. He is on Committee for a High Adventure Post and
is working on forming an Art Appreciation Post ... he has offered to bring
his violin to play an entrance theme for our entry into Gillwell Field ...
I wonder how that would go over ...
Fred Vaenuku - Fred is a baggage handler for American Airlines in San
Francisco. He has worked there for 15 years. He is married and has 3
children, one son and two daughters ... his children happen to be about the
same age as my children ... we each have one in 4th, one in 5th and one in
7th grade. Fred was active in Scouting for about 6 years, then he took
"time out" and is back now with his son.
Stan Karp - Stan was our first Patrol Leader -- elected somewhat be default
... after the opening campfire, "munchies" were provided and while Chuck
Marr (our Senior Patrol Leader) was verbalizing possibilities for how to
dismiss us from the campfire -- and help us locate out other same-patrol
members -- Chuck said "XXX's first" and headed for the table. That seemed
like a good leadership quality ... don't you agree?? He works for
Information Systems at Apple Computer. Stan lives in San Carlos and is an
Assistant Scoutmaster. He has been involved in Scouting for 5 years -- the
past 1 and a half with Boy Scouts (Webelos Cub Scout leader previously).
Stan has two boys in the Troop and a 3 year old son at home ... so he will
be with the program for a LOOOOONG time!!
and me ... if you are (relatively) new to Scouts-L you may not know me ...
I am Kyna Hendra. I am married to Gary ... THE MacScouter ... and we have
3 children: an almost-first-class Scout (cook for patrol, Conference and
Board left), a second-year Webelos and a just-turned Junior Girl Scout. I
started out as a Cub Scout leader and am currently Committee Chair of the
Pack (plus Tiger organizer, Den leader coach, newsletter editor, and
records keeper) and Assistant Scoutmaster (new scouts) for the troop (also
assist Gary, who is Advancement Chair) I am also Membership Chair for the
Mount Hamilton District ... which makes me part of the District Committee
and the Council Membership Committee. I don't have a "for pay" job ... I
don't have time!!
So far, it seems like our Patrol is working really well together ...
hopefully, that's because the course leaders did a good job of putting
together this group and not because we (collectively) figure we can survive
*anything* for 3 weekends. Actually, _I_ really like all of the guys in
"my" patrol ... they're all different, but all seem open and friendly and
willing to give us all - and the patrol as a whole - a chance ... and that
will probably go a long way!
We will most likely keep you posted ... and there has been some talk of a
Wood Badge course Web Page ... personally, I think that'd be 'kewl' (as the
Scouts put it) ... we could keep track of each Patrol's (and - as far as
possible - course member's) progress after the practical part of the course
and announce beadings ... sound good?? I don't know what *else* might go
onto that page ... gotta find out from Chuck what he and the Scoutmaster
WANT there, ya know??
