A friend/WB patrol mate who does not have computer access asked me to
put a request out for PowWow books. Please send me information on where/how
to get your books and I will forward this information to Sam.
Forgive me for using a little bandwidth.
I would like to tell you a little about my friend Sam Heverly. He lives
in Altoona, Pa. . He is "working a ticket" and wants to "see" other PowWow
books so he can put together an improved training book for his council
Sam is 47+/- years old. He has been very involved in scouting continuously
since youth. He is an amazingly resilient person and wealth of scouting
experience. Sam is 95+% blind. Sam has hiked Philmont twice. He has
worked the last several Nat. Jamboree's at the disabilities awareness area.
Sam nearly died when he was 6 years old when he was hit by car. That is
when he lost his vision. As you can see he has not let this stop him.....
Working with Sam in a Wood Badge patrol was an educational experience for
me. Sam was able to do many things to help our patrol (and me). We just did
not realize this at first... On one night on the way back to our campsite (
I had forgot my flashlight, and it was "pitch black". We had to go approx. a
1/3 mile in wooded trail) Sam guided me. I was as blind as he. It was a
very enlightening experience.
One of the more satisfying moments in the course was when I overheard Sam
telling someone- that when I taught him knife/ax safety - that I was the
first person to actually let him use an ax, sharpen a knife, make a fuzz
stick etc.. He said this meant alot to him, as did the efforts of the rest
of our patrol teach him/learn from him. Hearing that meant alot to me...
Thanks for letting me tell you a little about Sam Heverly. A wonderful
person to meet along scoutings trail.....
