Whetstone or wetstone?
In my dictionary it says that 'to whet' is to make sharp, deriving from
an Anglo-Saxon word hwaeten; there is a German word wetzen which derives
from the same origin. So a whetstone - however it is spelt - is (or at
least used to be) simply a stone for sharpening.
