Tom mentioned the embarrassment scouts express at wearing their uniforms,
having their pictures posted, etc.
I think it's important to remember that young people this age find
EVERYTHING embarrassing. They hate to be seen in public with their
parents. They worry endlessly about their clothes and appearance. Sure,
it's significant, but let's keep it in context. I think the best
approach is to just keep giving them positive reinforcement. Remind them
of all the ways that that they are cool in their own eyes. Kids look up
to someone who has climbed mountains or canoed a river. They love to
hear stories about bear encounters or building a fire in the rain.
Give them something to feel good about or maybe even to brag about and
they'll get through it.
