I had e-mail from a friend and OA officer in NC yesterday.
Old North State Council's camp, Cherokee Scout Reservation, near
Yanceyville, NC apparently took a lot of damage from Hurricane Fran. Lots
of trees were downed and one of the camp site shelters was demolished.
Unfortunately this was the shelter used during Wood Badge - aka MacLaran
Shelter - and a course was scheduled to start there this past weekend. In
spite of the hurricane on Thursday night, they started the course on
schedule Friday evening. Most of the council is further west and probably
(I don't know yet) not badly affected. I have no idea how many people
I have also been told there was a great deal of damage at the council camp
for Cape Fear Council (?) - the council where Klahican lodge 331 exists.
Raleigh, NC was very badly hit as well. I have not heard what sort of
damage was done to Occoneechee Council's Scouting properties.
Now if we can all go to NC, stand along the coast and blow. Perhaps this
will keep Hurricane Hortense away from there!
