Just had an interesting troop meeting. During the meeting
, I was listening to the older boys discussing wearing their uniforms,
Or wanting anyone to know that they are Scouts. Seems my son, an Eagle,
(age 14 for the on going posts) was telling these guys, all Star or
above, that he likes for people to know that he's a Scout, and that
a lot of people at school think it's cool.
The consensous of the others is that they don't want my son to even
mention their names when talking about Scouts to anyone. They feel
that the general consencous at school is that if you are a Scout then
you are a nerd.
My son asked what they felt about becoming an Eagle, their comment was
they're in Scouting to Make Eagle, because it looks good on a resume'.
Also I just printed a monthly news letter for the Troop, where
I used their names telling stories about summer camp. There feelings
were that this is really embarassing, what if their friends happen to
get a copy of this.
Also The local bank posteda picture of our troop at the camp o ree with
their names. How embarassing.
I asked them if this really was a problem for them. They said it sure
was, that they don't want any of their friends to know.
My question to the list is How would you handle this for Scout Spirit?
