Awana is a church sponsored program for children and youth. In this area
(North Carolina), my experience has been that it is usually a program of
independent Baptist churches (i.e., not affiliated with the Southern Baptist
Convention). SBC churches usually have Royal Ambassadors for their male
children and youth which is missions oriented, stresses Baptist beliefs and
polity, and has incorporated in some organizations an outdoor program with
"uniforms" and badges. Many churches, as does mine, has both Royal
Ambassadors and a large, very active Scout troop as well as Cub Scouts and
