I grew up in Southern California, and have many happy camping memories.
I'm not sure how far you want to go. The Sierras present endless
possibilities. Kings Canyon is a particular favorite-lots of pristine
backcountry and much less traffic than places like Yosemite. A little
closer to home are the San Jacinto Mountains. You can backpack up from
Idylwild, or if you're looking for something a little less strenuous,
there's a tram ride up the mountain from Palm Springs that the boys will
love, and campgrounds not far from the top. Farther north, the Trinity
Alps are some of the most beautiful, wild, and little known mountains in
California. Lots of camping options.
