I just saw a special on Canadian TV, that 2/3 (over 60 percent)
of Loon's (a water bird) that have been found dead, have been
killed by LEAD POISONING! Lead from fishing sinkers! Canada
is working on a National BAN of lead fishing weights in all
the national parks. Many TONS of lead fishing weights are sold
each year, and lost in lakes and streams. The national ban
will not currently effect provintial parks and stream.
The special went on to report that the alternative to LEAD
weights, that would increase the cost to fishing only about
10 cents for an average pack of sinkers or split shot.
I would like to ask that ALL scouts and scouters on the list
emphasize to the scouts, that LEAD fishing weights are a
hazard to wild life.
And along with the ban on LEAD, I would also ask that scouts
avoid the use of throw away stryofoam, whenever posible.
