This recent discussion reminded me of a conversation I had with my
youngest son while he was first learning to spell.
The word was "Silo". He looked at me and said he had had a problem
with his teacher over this word. I wasn't surprised, we were now
in Mass. & we had been living in the Mid-west prior to this. So
I asked him what the problem had been.
He told me: "The teacher asked if anyone knew what a silo was &
I raised my hand. When I told her that silos are where they keep
the missiles, she just looked at me funny & told me to check the
definition." (Did I mention his father had been a Titan II Combat
So I asked him if he had checked the dictionary, when he said no,
I made him read the definition: "A structure used by farmers to

To this day, I wonder how that teacher would have responded to
