I will mostly echo what several others have said about needing to follow
through on whatever form of discipline is decided upon.
In our troop we use a system similar to that of Dan Moser, with 3
strikes and you go home. We have come close to sending a person home,
but haven't actually done it yet. In the PLC we have discussed a
modification where, if there is a problem the PL first addresses it. If
he can't resolve the problem, then the SPL tries to address it. If
neither of them can solve it, then it goes to the SM. If the case goes
to the SM, then except in exceptional circumstances the boy goes home.
For PL and SPL, the chain of responsibility becomes shorter (so they
have to behave more). We haven't gotten all of the bugs worked out and
implemented this yet, so I can't comment on how this would work in
I think the important thing is for the boys (with adult input) to decide
on a workable system of discipline and then to stick to it. This keeps
everyone sure of what is going on.
