I recommend everyone who travels for any reason have a cell phone. The
coverage is almost saturated nationwide. I still find a few places where
there is no service (usually remote camping locations), but it is
certainly worth it to have the peace of mind of instant communication.
It will not solve all medical problems since help has to travel to your
location, but it will most certainly speed up the process. Even when you
travel on highways, a cell phone is a tremendous help in case of any
I do use Amateur Radio as well, but, a license is required which means
studying and taking a test. Not everyone is into learning the items
required for the license, so it is not a universal solution.
