Since I started this thread, I figured I should weigh back in and let
everyone know what the SM and I decided last night.
After weighing all the comments, rechecking the requirements and the
guidelines on MBs in various BSA pubs, and thinking about what best
would fit all of these concerns, we decided that the troop would count
all trips while with the troop (with only one week of summer camp) as
what they would sign off towards the requirement.
Any further camping being counted would be at the discretion of the
counselor. Both the SM and I are camping counselors, and we both agreed
that except in unusual cases we would encourage the boys to only use
camping with the troop/patrol for the MB (but that the requirements
wouldn't allow us to say that other camping would not count).
In answer to Cheryl Singhal's question about why this is at all an
issue, since the SM and I are two of the troop's counselors and are also
the ones the boys come to about badges, we needed to have a unified
policy with which to advise the boys. If another MB counselor decides to
do differently, as long as they act within BSA guidelines, we wouldn't
Thanks for all of the various points of view and clarifications of BSA
policy which you provided.
