My troop went to Sea Base in March 1995. We found air fares to Miami
from our home town of Knoxville, TN were roughly twice as high as those
in towns less than 150 miles away, such as Atlanta and Ashville, NC.
Our town had only one carrier to Miami at the time. SO...we drive to
Ashville, spend the night in a troop's sponsoring church building,
flew the next morning to Miami and then went via chartered limo (van) to
Sea Base. We had 16 in our group. One of our boy's mom's owns a
travel agency. She booked the plane tickets for us twelve months in advance.
We only had to pay something like $25 to hold each ticket until 30 days before
departure. This helped us spread out our fee collection. BTW, we were able
to do the Keys Adventure for $625, which included meals on the road. Obviously,
your costs will vary. See if you can find an airline or travel agency who
will work with you. Just hollar if you need more details.
