Hiker falls to death in North Cascades
AP- OKANOGAN- A Seattle man on a hike with a scout group, including his son,
died in a fall near Washington Pass in the Mazama area west of Winthrop.
Paul Hirning, 54, was one of seven adults on the hike with 11 Scouts,
Okanogan County Sheriff Jim Week said.
They were crossing a snowfield Wednesday when Hirning fell and landed on his
backpack. He lost his balance and slid 200 feet, hitting trees and rocks.
One of the hikers had a cell phone and called the sheriff's office, which
dispatched an air ambulance.
When the Sheriff's office got another call saying Hirning's condition had
worsened, it called the fire fighting smokejumpers base at Twisp.
An emergency medical technician parachuted to the scene, but Hirning was
