Pack 355 in Duncanville, Texas, just switched from the PTA at Alexander
Elementary to Duncanville's First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
The local PTA found an old directive in their officers' manual that raised
questions about liability of the local PTA officers, and without much further
discussion voted to drop sponsorship of the Pack. By the time we explained
to them that the old directive was a bit off, and we mustered support among
the parents, the board was not inclined to change its mind.
I was general board chairman for First Christian, we had just reactivated our
Christian Action/Community Service group, and everything else fit (FCC has
taken on a Girl Scout Brownie Troop and may add another).
I may be reading too much into it, but if your PTA is thinking of dropping
sponsorship, we should have a clear discussion about the National PTA's
position on leader liability, which I believe is wholly misdirected, and BSA
national's information on insurance, and our own understanding of liability
and how best to protect kids from molestation. If that's more than you
wanted, let's not bother with the discussion . . .
