This will probably be my last post for a while as I head for Philmont
tomorrow morning, visiting many Scouters along the way.
Yes the best recruitment tool is having the members of the Troop bring
other boys in. New boys via the Den Chief exposer. But older boys can be
attracted to the Troop by bring them in as guests on an outing. That
usually hooks them sometimes too well. Recently we had "guests" from a
neighboring Troop attend our White Water rafting Trip as we had it
divided easier for the younger boys and a more vigoruous trip for our
Venture crew. The other troop is new so there aren't any older boys in
mass yet for a venture crew so the two that are old enough were invited
to come along with ours. The result was that after the weekend they
wanted to jump Troops. (really bad as they were the sons of the SM and
one of the ASMs). Boy, I almost got in big trouble for that one ;-)!
The piont is that outings are what really sell the program, hook them and
reel them into the rest of it.
