Ok, I had to post on this subject because I feel VERY strongly about it.
My son (now an 11 3/4 year old boy scout who will soon receive his
Tenderfoot) has both parents, but one of them DOES NOT CAMP.
ABSOLUTELY, DOES NOT CAMP. (Get the picture) It is not his mother.
(Get the hint?) When we first camped between his wolf and bear year, we
were in the Southeast Missouri Council headquartered in Cape Girardeau
MO. OUR council had an event called Fun with Son for ALL Cub Scouts.
That enabled us to camp for the first time with the woman who has become
my mentor in Scouts (and who has recruited me to do all the fun stuff,
like Day Camp, Pow Wow, Den Leader Coach, since she is a District
Commissioner). I would never have made it and probably wouldn't have
gone if it had not been for Virginia. We also camped with another boy
and his dad from our pack and my den. It was a wonderful experience for
first time campers. The next year, our Council merged with the St.
Louis Area Council (which after bringing in the Egyptian Council of
Southern Illinois is now the GREATER St. Louis Area Council--please look
it up on a map for a proper perspective (-: ). St. Louis had/has very
strong opinions concerning female involvement in Scouting. They also
have strong opinion about female/male camping experiences. They are
very concerned that the females may not have "suitable" facilities--i.e.
showers. The men don't have to have showers, but Council assumes that
females do. OK, I'm off the subject and I'm really going to start
something. I knew I shouldn't have gotten started. Anyway, our Fun
with Son even within the district was out. Now, only Wolves to Bears
may attend Dad & Lad OR Mom & Me. Here's the real kicker: there are
several Dad & Lad sessions. There is only one Mom & Me. (At least last
year, since I'm not a Cub person this summer, I didn't pay attention.)
That means that our Dens are separated and we can't get the mentor
experience that I had my first camping time. And, it really seems
totally unfair. As someone posted earlier, What say you?
Sorry, this is long and gripy, but we just got a memo at work with
MAJOR BAD NEWS concerning parking.
