There is just no way you can do justice to the MOM/SON relationship
in an Akela/Cub event, and there is no way you can do justice to the
DAD/SON realtionship in that event either when you have both around.
As I said in my earlier post, the relationships vary so much. If we
were to change the name of our event, we would lose the flavor of
what our event is all about.
That is why you offer both events - MOM and SON and DAD and LAD.
Again, there is no reason to make anyone feel badly. Kids shouldn't
feel badly because they have lost a parent. That is part of life.
It is we, the adults, that say they should feel badly. If you look
around you, there are all types of events in and out of Scouting that
cater to a specific group. You can do a lot more with an event when
your audience is not so diverse.
Remember, this is IMHO.
I don't think we should argue the point. If you are doing an
Akela/Cub and doing well, hats off to you. Our MOM and SON likewise
does well. Hats off to us. There are many councils out there that
do not have any of these programs. Let's pat ourselves on the backs
for what we are doing for the Scouts of our councils!
