I'm Ron Dean with Pack 221, Roanoke VA. I have 1 son working on his Bear and
another that has 1 more year before Tiger Cubs. My 4 year old daughter has
been to so many Scouting funtions she is convinced she is going to be a Cub
Cubs is a new, but great experience for my wife Carol and myself. She, like
many others, thought of Cubs as a place to go have fun and that was it. We
have both grown a lot being Den leaders of our Wolf Den last year. And we
still had fun!
This past year we became very frustrated with the lack of Pack
leadership and direction. Planning was always done at the last minute or was
non-existant. We have senior leaders who still have the plastic wrap on
their Leader's book's. The Pack leader's wanted to divert our graduating
Webelo's and form their own troop. With a Pack of 100 boys we had minimal
participation of parents and a high burnout of leaders.
We have a good program that was starting to come apart because no one was
willing to do anything.
I was to the point of taking our Den and changing Pack's. That's
when Carol and my Eagle stepped in and told me to set an example. I've been
telling parent's not to complain unless they were willing to step forward
and help. Guess I needed to follow my own advice.
Anyway I stopped talking and started acting. Stepped into the postion of
Committie Chairman. Found out I have a lot of support from the parents. Most
have not volunteered because they have not been asked. We are getting back
on track instead of creating our own self-styled orginization.
My current issues to deal with are:
1. "It is supposed to be FUN. We do not want any structure." Coming from a
few senior leaders that have guided the Pack's direction in the past.
2. There is a good bit of monies in our coffers now thanks to a very
successful popcorn sales last year. There is a push on by others to spend
this money because we are non-profit. My problem is I can not get an
accounting of what our annual expenses are other than " About a $100 a month
on awards and etc.". What are the guidlines for reserves, expenditures, etc.?
I found the list at another low point and you have inspired me to
continue on. Thank You all.
