We used to run such an event along the C&O Canal outside Washington DC.
Started at 10 pm, usually on a nite of a full (or almost full) moon. A
family event, all ages and genders could participate. Breakfast was at
about the 20 mile point, starting at 5 am. Most stopped after
breakfast. Had to finish the 50 miles by 6 pm.
