When my son and I went to Philmont last year we both took our external
framepacks. I wasn't of a mind to have to spend a half an hour in
Albuquerque reassembling the strap, so I just moved them around as best I
could and secured their latches. At the airport in Seattle, United had a
dispenser with a roll of the large HEAVY mil clear plastic bags. We slip
one pack into one bag and it worked great both going and coming.
To discourage pilfering (or at least to know if it had been done right
away) I carried some craft lace with me and secured the zipper pulls
together with a quick braid of a couple of inches.
