We still use our patrol boxes on base camp campouts but one thing we do
use the rubbermaid totes for is staple items. We found that many times a
patrol would have pancakes, biscuts, dump cake, etc. and only use a
portion of a box/bag. Sugar was the culprit that caused us to go to
community staples. One campout the leaders had 4 bags of the stuff and
had bought another, all the scouts had at least a partial bag for a grand
total of 30 to 32 lbs. Now the quartermaster inventories the box at the
end of camp and reports to our adult who ultimately stores the entire
tote in his freezer. No bugs, no weight overload and best of all no waste.
