re: taking packs through the luggage handling systems of airports
I have taken a pack through O'Hare airport. When I checked in the pack was
enclosed in a large plastic bag similar to what is placed over dry cleaning,
but of a thicker guage.
I had no trouble with the straps and such, however one of the pins on the
pack was broken when I picked it up at the other end. I don't know if it
just broke from normal wear and tear or if it was the handling.
Airlines are used to dealing with unusual items such as backpacks, even if
they still handle them roughly. Standard cautions about fragile and
breakable items apply.
