I have returned to the cornfields of DeKalb, Illinois.
I spent two weeks on the road with a small group of my Scouts traveling to
the Florida Keys. It was a great time, it went by all too fast though.
I had intentions of meeting some Scouts-L people enroute. Don Robinson
and Ed Henderson I didn't connect with. We were behind schedule on those
days. We did enjoy a great raft trip on the Ocoee river and did some
mountain biking at the Gerald I. Lawhorn Canoe Base. I visited both camp
stores at the base and Thunder Scout Reservation. Ed has a very
Terry Lynch in Tampa gave us an oustanding tour of a P-3 hurricane hunter
aircraft at MacDill AFB. He showed us all the gadgets and told stories of
what it is like to fly into the eye of a hurricane.
Charlie Thorpe took into the bowels of the earth for an adventurous
subterranean romp through a cave called Lem Rock. He had us crawling on
our bellies through low passages, and wading through waist deep water in
flooded galleries. The boys loved it. It was a highlight of the trip.
We also visited museums, snorkeled coral reefs in the keys, etc., etc.
We took a tour of the Sea Base, although we did not do a program there.
The total cost to the boys for the 14 day trip was $475. There were
funds leftover, so the final cost will be lower and the boys will recieve
a refund. I will be settling up with the car rental agency this afternoon.
Glad to be back home.
