OK Gang here is a little info on deet. It was developed in 1956 -1957.
It remains the most effective protection from mosquitos. Pediatricians
recommend that children under the age of 12 should use a product with
6% deet or less. The reason? Higher levels may cause hypertension in
some childeren. The misconception with deet is that the higher the
concentration the better it is. The truth is that deet is effective at
levels of about 3% and above. The higher concentration only extends the
time between reapplication. So, 6% gives you about 2 hours of
protection, 14% about 4 hours, 30% about 7 hours and 100% about 10
hours. The key to safe use is to apply the products to the skin
sparingly and more on the clothing. Considering scouts age 12 and above,
I would recommend a 14-16% deet product. That way they can get a longer
protection time without a high concentration.
