DEET is the only "active" incredient in most insect repellants. The
more the DEET, the more effective the repellant, usually. However, there are
potential side effects to repellants that use a high percentage of DEET. I
know a few people who feel a mild burning sensation, so they stick with brands
that carry less DEET.
That being said, my favorite is either Muskol or Ben's. Both have very
high percentage of DEET. Get the small bottle of liquid rather than the spray.
A couple drops of each arm and face works well. If you want to stay away from
a lot of DEET, use Cutters. It still has a higher percentage of DEET than some
brands, but I have never heard of anyone having an adverse reaction. Again, I
prefer the liquid rather than the spray. The bottles are easier to pack and
they contain no propellants. They also last longer.
Hope this helps. BTW, DEET is Diethylmetatuluomide (I think).
