Don't feel bad for trying to be nice. A hoax would not work if everyone
knew about it! I almost fell for the Shergood scheme last year when a
notice appeared in our local "Flyer" newspaper. It seemed odd that I had
not heard of it on Scouts-L as it is a natural for Scouts et.al.
So being the mighty internaut I ran a search through the Web and Usenet
for information on this "hoax". Naturally it started true enough but
happilly Craig recovered and is still doing well as I understand. He now
only wishes he could stop getting the get well cards, letters etc. The
Make A Wish foundation also wishes it would stop as their address was
added to the scheme at some point also.
The good thing though is that you have over 600 friends on Scouts-L and
another 3-4 million on usenet that will gladly set you straight and fill
you in on this and other scams. It is unfortunate but "buyer beware"
(forgot the Latin) also appears to apply to Charities and kindly acts as
well, these days.
Perhaps we can all apply this lesson and how we feel when we are made to
feel a bit silly to the hazing, initiations etc. of the boys and girls?
Yours in Scouting, Jess
