I'd like to hike the Chilkoot (sp?) Trail someday. Alaska's a long way
from Illinois. It's on my wish list though.
As for floating, we've done canoe trips lasting 200 miles in 8 days.
Thats 25 miles/day. It depends largely on the rate of flow.
For example if the river's flow is 2mph, and you canoe 2mph, you could
travel about 24 miles in 6 hours of continuous paddling. It depends on
how fast the river is, and how fast the boys are.
8 days is pretty nice for gear etc. I know of groups that have done 2
weeks. It's possible you could make 500 miles in two weeks of paddling
on a good current.
Good luck on your plans.
