Philmont actually has been expanded in the past few years with the lease
of about 50,000 acres of land from the adjacent Kit Carson National Forest
(Valle Vidal). I believe they are now running about 22,000 campers
through the backcountry, thousands more than ever before.
In the past 15 years we have seen the closure of three national high
adventure bases; Northern Wisconsin Canoe Base, Maine High Adventure
Base, and Land Between the Lakes. Although these adventures are still
available through other sources, they are not promoted as they were in the
With the increased demand for scouts seeking high adventure, the national
council needs to either implement another "Philmont style base", or make
a major promotion effort of alternative high adventure programs
administered by regions and councils. (and there are many)
Of course demand for Philmont will always remain high. There is no other
experience for Scouts that compares to Philmont Scout Ranch.
