The only problem, Scot, is that you have "conservation" and "Scouting"
The profession of Scouting has very little to do with conservation nor
environmental education. The Scouting profession is more of a
volunteer management, finance, and public relations position than any
thing else. Most professionals have little "face time" with kids, and some
have even less "face time" with their volunteers that execute the program.
What you may be interested in, however, is a Ranger's position within one
of the 368 local Councils or at one of the four National Outdoor Adventure
bases, the largest being out at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Those
positions work in the outdoors, with in many cases mid to high contact with
Scouts and Scouters from all over, and it is a conservation/maintenance/park
development type position. Many Rangers are former volunteers and there
are a few that have served as professionals before.
I've written a lot of information on what the profession of Scouting entails
without "pulling punches" and I can dig them up for you (especially after
I'm in the middle of finding some Eagle information I've posted here a while
back for someone else...its been some kind of weekend here!!!). I'll be more
than happy to talk personally with you if you like, about the profession and
the possibilily of your working alongside some great career Scouters, or to
just send the file to you and you can decide on your own.
