Two quick personal opinions here.
I would shy away from using military officers or enlisted men. The BSA is
trying real hard to kill any "militaristic" image it might have. This could
send the wrong message.
IME, the young kids are very impressed when some (older teenager) Eagle
Scout comes to "inspect" them. The full uniform with all the "doo-dads
and gee-gaws" really impresses them. IME, to them, it's cool! However,
(again IME) to most young kids, the merit badge sash is more impressive.
Kids have an inkling what the badges mean. A red arrow on a white sash
might not be as impressive to them.
